A hijacked channel can go live in your name, and its followers are the ones who get scammed. With an authenticator app on, a stolen password is no longer enough to sign in.

Turn on two-factor authentication on Twitch

Twitch needs a verified email address, and 2FA can only be turned on at twitch.tv in a browser. Twitch also always verifies a mobile phone number by text message first — VoIP numbers and landlines are not supported — and only then offers the authenticator app. Turning 2FA on signs you out of Twitch on every other device.

Sign in at twitch.tv on your computer, click your profile picture in the top right corner and select “Settings”.
Open the “Security and Privacy” tab, click “Set Up Two-Factor Authentication”, then “Enable 2FA”.
Enter your mobile phone number and click “Continue”, then enter the seven-digit code Twitch texts you and click “Continue”.

Add Twitch to Authenticator

Install 2FA Authenticator from the Chrome Web Store and pin it to the toolbar, so its icon is one click away.
Leave the Twitch page with the QR code open. Click the Authenticator icon, then “Add Account” → “QR Code” → “Scan QR from screen”.
The account appears in the list with a six-digit code that changes every 30 seconds. Rename it if you like — the name is only for you.
Go back to Twitch and type the current code into the confirmation field. If it is about to expire, wait for the next one.
Twitch confirms that two-factor authentication is on. From now on it will ask for a code when you sign in — click the extension icon and copy it.

No QR code, or it will not scan? Look for the option to enter a key manually on Twitch’s setup screen, copy the key, and add it in the extension with “Add Account” → “Manual” → “Secret Key”.

Keep a way back into Twitch

Twitch keeps your phone number as a text message backup, and suggests scanning the same QR code with more than one app or device during setup — so a lost authenticator is not a lost account. If you lose both the authenticator and the phone number, you are locked out until you change the number through Authy’s Phone Change Form, which Authy processes in 24–48 business hours and Twitch Support cannot speed up. Keeping the extension’s automatic backups on means a reinstall does not put you in that queue.

The code is not accepted?

Almost always the computer’s clock. The codes are calculated from the current time, so a clock that is a minute off produces codes that look right and are refused. Turn on automatic date and time in your system settings — step-by-step for Windows, macOS and Linux.

If the clock is right, check the key itself: paste it into the TOTP code generator and compare the code with the one in the extension. If they differ, the key was copied wrong — add the account again.
