When did Authy desktop stop working?

March 19, 2024, for Windows, macOS and Linux. Twilio announced the date on February 19, 2024, moving it forward from August 2024. The Authy Chrome app and extension had ended earlier, in 2020.

Can I export my codes from Authy?

Not officially. Twilio's help centre says exporting or importing tokens in the Authy app is not supported. The reliable way out is to set up each account's authenticator again in the new app.

Is Authy still available on phones?

Yes. Authy continues on iOS and Android; only the desktop and browser versions were discontinued.

Will my codes be different in the new app?

After you re-enrol, the site issues a new secret, so the new app's codes are what count and Authy's old entry for that account stops working. That is why you confirm with the new code before removing the old entry.

Do I need a phone to use an Authy alternative?

No. Desktop apps and browser extensions generate codes on the computer. Ours can scan a QR code from the screen, so setup needs no phone either.

Authy Desktop Alternative (2026): Free Apps for PC, Mac and Chrome

Authy's desktop apps for Windows, macOS and Linux stopped working on March 19, 2024 — Twilio brought the date forward from August 2024 — and its Chrome app ended in 2020. Authy now runs only on phones. Free replacements that work on a computer: Proton Authenticator and Ente Auth (desktop apps, open source), KeePassXC (desktop), or a browser extension such as Authenticator (authenticator.cc) or 2FA Authenticator — ours.

Whichever you choose, the hard part is the same: Authy has no export. Twilio's help centre says exporting tokens is not supported, so moving means setting up each account's authenticator again, one site at a time. It takes a couple of minutes per account, and you can keep Authy on your phone until the last one is done.

No app can read Authy's accounts directly, because Authy offers no export. Paid password managers with desktop apps (1Password, Bitwarden Premium) also generate codes; see the Chrome extension comparison.

Which one to pick

You want a desktop app that also syncs to your phone: Proton Authenticator or Ente Auth. Both are free and open source, both run on Windows, macOS, Linux, iPhone and Android, and neither requires an account unless you want sync.

You sign in to most things in Chrome: a browser extension puts the code where you need it. Ours inserts the code into the page with a right-click or Ctrl+Shift+Y and can scan a setup QR code straight off the screen, so you do not need a phone to add accounts. Authenticator (authenticator.cc) has more users and supports more code types.

You already keep a KeePassXC database: add the codes there; KeePassXC-Browser fills them in Chrome.

How to move your accounts off Authy

1. Install the replacement and keep Authy on your phone for now.

2. Sign in to one account on a computer and open its security or two-step verification settings. Look for "change authenticator app", or turn authenticator-app 2FA off and on again. Our setup guides show where this is for 17 common services.

3. Scan the new QR code with the replacement. Ours can read it straight from the screen; if the site shows a text key instead, paste that.

4. Enter the code the new app shows to confirm, and save the new backup codes the site gives you — the old ones may stop working.

5. Remove that account from Authy only once the new code has worked. Repeat for the next account.

Ente lists unofficial tools that pull secrets out of Authy in one go. They are not supported by Twilio, depend on Authy's private interfaces, and handle every secret you have — we would re-enrol account by account instead.
