Does Google make a Chrome extension for Google Authenticator?

No. Google Authenticator is available for Android and iPhone/iPad only. Chrome extensions using the name are made by other developers.

Will the codes in Chrome be the same as on my phone?

Yes. Google Authenticator uses standard TOTP: a code is computed from the secret key and the current time, so any app holding the same key shows the same code at the same moment.

Can I use Google Authenticator on a PC without my phone?

Not the Google app itself. Export your accounts from it once, import them into a desktop app or a Chrome extension, and from then on you can get codes on the PC without the phone.

Is it safe to move codes off my phone?

The export QR code contains your secret keys, so show it only to the app you are importing into and do not screenshot it to a cloud-synced folder. Against phishing and leaked passwords, codes in a well-built extension protect you as well as codes on a phone; a phone adds protection only against someone who controls your computer.

Google Authenticator for Chrome? No Extension Exists

There is no Google Authenticator extension for Chrome, and no desktop version. Google publishes Google Authenticator only for Android and iPhone/iPad, and anything in the Chrome Web Store with that name is made by someone else. To get the same codes in Chrome, use a third-party TOTP extension: the codes follow an open standard (RFC 6238), so the same secret key gives the same six digits in any app.

You do not have to add your accounts again. Google Authenticator can export them itself — Menu → Transfer codes → Export codes shows a QR code — and extensions such as ours and authenticator.cc import that QR code in one scan. Your phone keeps its copy.

Google Password Manager is the one built into Chrome. Google's Chrome help documents saving passwords and passkeys in it; we found no Google page describing 2FA code generation. Move your codes from Google Authenticator to Chrome

1. Install a TOTP extension — ours is 2FA Authenticator.

2. On your phone, open Google Authenticator → Menu → Transfer codes → Export codes, and pick the accounts to move.

3. In the extension, choose to import, then scan the QR code with your webcam or upload a photo of it. Every selected account comes across at once, with its name and settings.

4. Check one code against the phone. They should match digit for digit; if they are off, the computer's clock is wrong — see the FAQ on clock drift.

Exporting copies accounts; nothing is removed from the phone unless you choose to. Keeping both is a reasonable backup.

Does Google Authenticator's cloud sync help?

Since April 2023 Google Authenticator can back up codes to your Google Account, which helps when you replace your phone. It does not put them on a computer: Google documents the app for Android and iPhone/iPad only, with no web or desktop view of the codes.

Choosing an extension you can trust

An authenticator holds the keys to your accounts, so check what you install: the publisher (not a name that only borrows Google's), whether the source code is public, how many permissions it asks for, and whether it needs an account.
