Is there an official Google Authenticator extension for Chrome?

No. Google publishes Google Authenticator for Android and iPhone/iPad only. Any Chrome extension named after it is made by someone else. A third-party TOTP extension produces the same six-digit codes from the same secret key, and most can import Google Authenticator's export QR code.

Is it safe to keep 2FA codes in the browser?

It is a trade-off. Codes on a separate phone protect you if your computer is compromised; codes in the browser protect you from phishing and leaked passwords just the same, and are much faster to use. What matters most is that the extension is open source, keeps secrets on your device, and asks for few permissions — ours asks for no host permissions and runs no content scripts (how it works).

Best Authenticator Extensions for Chrome (2026)

For free 2FA codes generated inside Chrome with no account, there are two real options: Authenticator by authenticator.cc (9,000,000 users, open source, but its Chrome Web Store build was last updated in August 2024) and 2FA Authenticator — ours (200,000 users, open source, updated this month). If you already pay for a password manager, its built-in authenticator is the simplest choice: Bitwarden (TOTP needs Premium, $19.80/year), 1Password (subscription) or Proton Pass (paid plan).

Two popular extensions fill codes but do not generate them in the browser: 2FAS needs its phone app to approve each code, and KeePassXC-Browser needs the KeePassXC desktop app running. Google, Microsoft and Authy do not publish a Chrome extension at all.

Bitwarden, 1Password and Proton Pass are password managers; their user counts are for the whole extension, not for people using its authenticator. Bitwarden stores keys on the free plan but only generates codes on Premium. We make 2FA Authenticator.

Which one to pick

You want codes in Chrome, free, with no account. Authenticator (authenticator.cc) or 2FA Authenticator. Authenticator does more code types — HOTP, Steam and Blizzard codes as well as TOTP — and can back up to Google Drive, OneDrive or Dropbox; it has by far the most users. 2FA Authenticator is the one being updated this year, inserts the code into the page you are on (right-click or Ctrl+Shift+Y), can scan a QR code straight off the screen, and can share a code by link without sharing the secret. Both import Google Authenticator's export QR code, so trying one costs nothing.

You already use a password manager. Use its authenticator: it fills the code right after the password. Bitwarden needs Premium to generate codes, 1Password has no free plan, and Proton Pass lists 2FA as a paid feature. The trade-off is that the password and the second factor then sit in one vault behind one master password — convenient, and a smaller step up in security than keeping them apart.

You want the codes on your phone, with the browser as a shortcut. 2FAS Auth sends each code from the 2FAS phone app to Chrome after you approve it. If you already keep a KeePassXC database on your computer, KeePassXC-Browser fills codes from it.

Not on the list, and why

Google Authenticator runs only on Android and iPhone; there is no Chrome extension or desktop app — see Google Authenticator for Chrome. Authy ended its Chrome app in 2020 and its desktop apps on March 19, 2024 — see Authy desktop alternatives. Microsoft Authenticator is a phone app only. Ente Auth has desktop apps but no official browser extension; one is an open feature request.

Extensions that only relay codes from a phone and have a few thousand users or fewer are also left out. So is anything whose listing is named after Google, Microsoft or Authy but is not published by them.
