Authenticator 1.15.2 is here. See what's new

Airtable authenticator app

Airtable two-factor authentication works with an authenticator app — Airtable names Google Authenticator and Duo, and one in your browser works just as well. On your account page, click “Set up two-factor authentication”, sign in again, click “Enable”, and scan the QR code from the screen with the Authenticator extension.

An Airtable account opens every base you can see — customer lists, inventories, content calendars, often your team’s whole way of working — and the automations built on them. A stolen password is enough to export or change all of it. With 2FA on, Airtable also asks for a code from your authenticator, and an app is the way to get it: Airtable no longer offers SMS codes to new customers.

Turn on two-factor authentication in Airtable

These steps work only for an account with its own Airtable password. If you sign in with Google, Airtable says to add a password to the account first.

  1. Open your account overview at airtable.com/account in Chrome on your computer.
  2. Click “Set up two-factor authentication” below your name and email. If the option is missing, 2FA is already on.
  3. Sign in again when Airtable asks — it does so for security.
  4. Click “Enable”. Airtable shows a QR code: leave it on the screen and add it to the extension as described below.
  5. Enter the code from the extension. Once Airtable accepts it, two-factor authentication is on.

Add Airtable to Authenticator

  1. Install 2FA Authenticator from the Chrome Web Store and pin it to the toolbar, so its icon is one click away.
  2. Leave the Airtable page with the QR code open. Click the Authenticator icon, then “Add Account” → “QR Code” → “Scan QR from screen”.
  3. The account appears in the list with a six-digit code that changes every 30 seconds. Rename it if you like — the name is only for you.
  4. Go back to Airtable and type the current code into the confirmation field. If it is about to expire, wait for the next one.
  5. Airtable confirms that two-factor authentication is on. From now on it will ask for a code when you sign in — click the extension icon and copy it.

No QR code, or it will not scan? Look for the option to enter a key manually on Airtable’s setup screen, copy the key, and add it in the extension with “Add Account” → “Manual” → “Secret Key”.

Save your Airtable backup codes

Airtable’s backup codes are single-use and 12 characters long. Find them on your 2FA page under “Backup options” → “Show single-use backup codes”, and write them down or store them somewhere safe, away from this computer. Without your authenticator and without the codes, the way back is Airtable Support’s identity verification.

The code is not accepted?

Most often the QR code changed: the website makes a new one each time its setup page is reloaded or opened again, so the account you added first no longer matches. Start the setup again, add the QR code that is on the screen now and type its code in straight away. Two entries for the same website? Use the newest. Other reasons: why codes are refused.

Typed the key in by hand? Paste it into the TOTP code generator and compare the code with the one in the extension. If they differ, the key was copied wrong — add the account again.

Questions

Can I use Airtable 2FA without a phone?
Yes. Airtable describes an authenticator app on your phone, but all it checks is the code, and any standard authenticator produces it. The Authenticator extension reads the QR code off the Airtable page and generates the codes in Chrome — no call or text message needed.
Can I still get Airtable codes by text message?
Not as a new customer: Airtable has deprecated SMS codes for new customers. Accounts that already use SMS keep receiving codes but cannot change the phone number, and users on paid workspaces can still use SMS. An authenticator app works for everyone.
What if I lose my authenticator and my backup codes?
Airtable Support can restore access after verifying your identity — its help describes reaching it through the question mark in the upper-right corner → “Contact support”. If your organization signs in through SSO, the admin of your identity provider resets the second factor instead.
How do I move Airtable 2FA to a new authenticator?
Turn 2FA off on your account page, then turn it on again: Airtable makes a new QR code for the new app. The account you added before stops working, so delete it from the extension.

Your codes, one click from the login page

Authenticator keeps your 2FA codes in the browser, on your device only — free to use, open source, no account and no phone needed. Local backups and optional password protection come built in.
