TikTok authenticator app

TikTok 2-step verification works with any third-party authenticator app, including one in your browser. In the TikTok app open Settings and privacy → Security & permissions → 2-step verification, choose “Authenticator”, and add the QR code or key TikTok shows to the Authenticator extension.

A TikTok account carries your followers, your videos and, for creators, the income tied to them — and a hijacked account is used to post scams to everyone who follows it. TikTok strongly recommends 2-step verification: with it on, someone who has your password still needs a code when signing in from a new or unfamiliar device.

Turn on 2-step verification in TikTok

TikTok’s help describes this setting only in the TikTok mobile app, so the QR code appears on your phone, not on the computer — the steps further down show how to get it from the phone into the extension. TikTok also asks for at least two methods, so have your phone number or email ready as the second.

  1. Open the TikTok app on your phone and tap “Profile” at the bottom.
  2. Tap the Menu ☰ button at the top, then select “Settings and privacy”.
  3. Tap “Security & permissions”, then “2-step verification”.
  4. Choose “Authenticator” and at least one other method — phone or email — and tap “Turn on”.
  5. TikTok shows a QR code and a key. Keep that screen open and add it to the extension as described below — then enter the code from the extension on the next screen in the TikTok app.

Add TikTok to Authenticator

  1. Install 2FA Authenticator from the Chrome Web Store on your computer and pin it to the toolbar.
  2. Keep the QR code open in the TikTok app on your phone. On the computer, click the Authenticator icon, then “Add Account” → “QR Code” → “Scan QR with camera”, and allow the camera when Chrome asks.
  3. Hold the phone’s screen up to the computer’s camera until the QR code is read. The account appears in the list with a six-digit code that changes every 30 seconds.
  4. Type the current code from the extension into the TikTok app on your phone. If it is about to expire, wait for the next one.
  5. TikTok confirms that 2-step verification is on. From now on, when it asks for a code — in the app or on tiktok.com — click the extension icon and read it off.

No camera on the computer? Tap the option to copy the key on TikTok’s setup screen, send it to yourself, and add it in the extension with “Add Account” → “Manual” → “Secret Key” — then delete the message, since the key is as good as the codes themselves.

Keep your TikTok recovery code

TikTok’s help mentions a recovery code you receive when you set up the authenticator — it is what lets you reset your authentication method if you lose the app. If TikTok shows it to you, write it down and keep it away from this computer. Beyond that, your way back is the second method you chose — your phone number or email — and the extension’s automatic backups. TikTok warns that proving your identity without the recovery code can take up to 30 days.

The code is not accepted?

Almost always the computer’s clock. The codes are calculated from the current time, so a clock that is a minute off produces codes that look right and are refused. Turn on automatic date and time in your system settings — step-by-step for Windows, macOS and Linux.

If the clock is right, check the key itself: paste it into the TOTP code generator and compare the code with the one in the extension. If they differ, the key was copied wrong — add the account again.

Questions

Which authenticator app works with TikTok?
TikTok names Google Authenticator and Microsoft Authenticator, and any app that produces standard six-digit codes works — including the Authenticator extension in Chrome. It can read the QR code from your phone with the computer’s camera, or take the key TikTok shows.
Can I set up TikTok 2-step verification on my computer?
TikTok’s help describes the setup only in its mobile app, so you start it there. The codes do not have to stay on the phone, though: once the account is in the extension, it gives you the code in Chrome whenever TikTok asks for one, on the computer or for the app.
What if I lose access to my authenticator?
Use the other method you chose — TikTok requires two — or reset the authentication method with your recovery code. Without the code, choose “Need more help?” and verify your identity; TikTok says this can take up to 30 days. Keeping the extension’s automatic backups on means a reinstall does not lose the account.
Why does TikTok say my code is wrong?
Usually the computer clock is off by a minute or more. Turn on automatic date and time and try the next code. If it still fails, the account may have been added from an old QR code — remove it from the extension and set the authenticator up again in the TikTok app.
