Wix authenticator app

Wix 2-Step verification works with any authenticator app, including one in your browser. In Account Settings scroll to “2-Step verification”, click “Enable” next to “Verify logins with an authenticator app”, scan the QR code from the screen with the Authenticator extension, and submit the six-digit code.

A Wix account holds every site you built, their domains, your store’s orders and the payment settings for them. Whoever signs in with a stolen password can take a site down or redirect its payments. With an authenticator app on, Wix also asks for a six-digit code on any device it does not recognise — and Wix itself calls an app safer than SMS or email, because the code is made on your device rather than sent to you.

Turn on the authenticator app in Wix

Wix recommends setting up a recovery phone number before turning on 2-Step verification. You can have several methods on at once; Wix asks for them in a fixed order — the Wix app first, then the authenticator app, then SMS, then email — and at sign-in you can pick another one.

  1. Sign in to your Wix account on your computer and go to “Account Settings”.
  2. Scroll down to “2-Step verification”.
  3. Click “Enable” next to “Verify logins with an authenticator app”.
  4. Enter your Wix password in the pop-up.
  5. Wix shows a QR code. Leave it on the screen and add it to the extension as described below — then click “Next”, enter the six-digit code and click “Submit”.

Add Wix to Authenticator

  1. Install 2FA Authenticator from the Chrome Web Store and pin it to the toolbar, so its icon is one click away.
  2. Leave the Wix page with the QR code open. Click the Authenticator icon, then “Add Account” → “QR Code” → “Scan QR from screen”.
  3. The account appears in the list with a six-digit code that changes every 30 seconds. Rename it if you like — the name is only for you.
  4. Go back to Wix and type the current code into the confirmation field. If it is about to expire, wait for the next one.
  5. Wix confirms that two-factor authentication is on. From now on it will ask for a code when you sign in — click the extension icon and copy it.

No QR code, or it will not scan? Look for the option to enter a key manually on Wix’s setup screen, copy the key, and add it in the extension with “Add Account” → “Manual” → “Secret Key”.

Add a second way into Wix

Wix lists “Recovery Code” among its 2-Step verification methods — a saved backup code for when your other methods are not available. If you turn it on in the same “2-Step verification” section, keep the code somewhere other than this computer. Add a second method too, such as SMS or the Wix app: with no working method left, the only way back is Wix’s account recovery form, and 2-Step verification has to be set up again afterwards.

The code is not accepted?

Almost always the computer’s clock. The codes are calculated from the current time, so a clock that is a minute off produces codes that look right and are refused. Turn on automatic date and time in your system settings — step-by-step for Windows, macOS and Linux.

If the clock is right, check the key itself: paste it into the TOTP code generator and compare the code with the one in the extension. If they differ, the key was copied wrong — add the account again.

Questions

Do I need the Wix app or a phone for 2-Step verification?
No. Wix names Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator, Authy, Duo Mobile and LastPass Authenticator, but any app that produces standard six-digit codes works. The Authenticator extension reads the QR code straight off the Wix page and generates the codes in Chrome.
Why does Wix not ask me for a code every time?
Wix asks only when you sign in with your email and password, and it remembers a device for 30 days by default. On a new device or after 30 days, it asks again.
What if I lose access to my authenticator?
At sign-in, choose another method you set up — a recovery code, SMS, the Wix app or email — then use “Reset App” in 2-Step verification to connect the authenticator again. With no method left, fill in Wix’s account recovery form. Keeping the extension’s automatic backups on means a reinstall does not get that far.
Why does Wix say my code is wrong?
Usually the computer clock is off by a minute or more. Turn on automatic date and time and try the next code. If it still fails, the account may have been added from an old QR code — click “Reset App” in 2-Step verification and add the new QR code.

Your codes, one click from the login page

Authenticator keeps your 2FA codes in the browser, on your device only — free to use, open source, no account and no phone needed. Local backups and optional password protection come built in.
