Notion authenticator app

Notion 2-step verification works with any authenticator app, including one in your browser. Open Settings → your name → Account security → Add verification method, choose “Code from authenticator”, and scan the QR code from the screen with the Authenticator extension.

A Notion account opens every workspace you belong to — notes, plans, wikis, client work, and the pages Notion AI searches and writes in. Whoever has your password can read all of it and share it out. With 2-step verification on, Notion also asks for the code from your authenticator when you sign in with your password, so a leaked or reused password alone is not enough.

Turn on 2-step verification in Notion

Notion offers 2-step verification only to accounts with a password. If you sign in with temporary login codes, set one first: Settings → your name → “Set a password”. If your organization requires login through an identity provider (Okta, Microsoft Azure, Google Workspace), set up the second step there instead. Depending on your region, the authenticator may be the only method offered. On the Enterprise Plan, organization owners can require it of guests, but not of workspace members.

  1. Open Notion in Chrome on your computer and sign in.
  2. In the sidebar, select the down arrow next to the workspace name, go to “Settings” and select your name.
  3. Under “Account security”, select “Add verification method” next to “2-step verification”.
  4. Choose “Code from authenticator”.
  5. Notion shows a QR code. Leave it on the screen and add it to the extension as described below — then name the method and enter the one-time code from the extension to finish.

Add Notion to Authenticator

  1. Install 2FA Authenticator from the Chrome Web Store and pin it to the toolbar, so its icon is one click away.
  2. Leave the Notion page with the QR code open. Click the Authenticator icon, then “Add Account” → “QR Code” → “Scan QR from screen”.
  3. The account appears in the list with a six-digit code that changes every 30 seconds. Rename it if you like — the name is only for you.
  4. Go back to Notion and type the current code into the confirmation field. If it is about to expire, wait for the next one.
  5. Notion confirms that two-factor authentication is on. From now on it will ask for a code when you sign in — click the extension icon and copy it.

No QR code, or it will not scan? Look for the option to enter a key manually on Notion’s setup screen, copy the key, and add it in the extension with “Add Account” → “Manual” → “Secret Key”.

Save your six Notion backup codes

If the authenticator is your first 2-step method, Notion gives you a set of six backup codes as you finish — save them somewhere other than this computer. Each works once: at the sign-in prompt, click “Try another method” → “Use backup code”. When all six are used up, you can generate a new set in your settings.

The code is not accepted?

Most often the QR code changed: the website makes a new one each time its setup page is reloaded or opened again, so the account you added first no longer matches. Start the setup again, add the QR code that is on the screen now and type its code in straight away. Two entries for the same website? Use the newest. Other reasons: why codes are refused.

Typed the key in by hand? Paste it into the TOTP code generator and compare the code with the one in the extension. If they differ, the key was copied wrong — add the account again.

Questions

Which authenticator apps work with Notion?
Any app that produces standard time-based codes (TOTP) — Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator, Authy, or a browser extension like this one. The Authenticator extension reads the QR code straight off the Notion settings page, so no phone is needed.
Can I add more than one authenticator to Notion?
Yes — up to four verification methods: two authenticators and two phone numbers. Select “Change verification method” next to 2-step verification, confirm with a method that already works, then click “Add authenticator”. A second authenticator is a good way back if you lose the first.
What if I lose access to my authenticator?
Sign in with one of your backup codes, then set the authenticator up again. If the codes are gone too, contact Notion support — and keep the extension’s automatic backups on, so a reinstall does not cost you the account.
Why does Notion say my code is wrong?
Usually the computer clock is off by a minute or more. Turn on automatic date and time and try the next code. If it still fails, the account may have been added from an old QR code — remove it from the extension, delete that method in Account security, and add it again.

Your codes, one click from the login page

Authenticator keeps your 2FA codes in the browser, on your device only — free to use, open source, no account and no phone needed. Local backups and optional password protection come built in.
