NaviNet connects your office to its health plans — eligibility, claims, authorizations and patient documents — so NaviNet requires every user to sign in with a password plus a verification code, to keep confidential patient information from attackers. An authenticator in the browser on the office computer means nobody at the front desk has to use a personal phone for it.
Set up multi-factor authentication in NaviNet
NaviNet turns MFA on office by office; until it is on for yours, the setup window does not appear. Its QR code is shown during this first setup only, so add it to the extension before you leave the window. You pick one method: an authenticator app on a phone, an authenticator in the browser, or email authentication. For help with your method, NaviNet sends you to your office’s NaviNet security officer — NantHealth Support cannot help with MFA.
- Open NaviNet in Chrome on your computer and sign in with your username and password.
- Once MFA is on for your office, NaviNet shows the “Set up Multi-Factor Authentication” window with a QR code that is unique to your account. Do not close it and do not share the QR code.
- When NaviNet shows the QR code, leave that window open and add it to the extension as described below — or type the long code shown in the window into the extension for manual entry. NaviNet’s help calls the entry NantHealth NaviNet.
- Type the current code from the extension into the “Verification Code” box, without spaces, and click “Verify”.
Add NaviNet to Authenticator
- Install 2FA Authenticator from the Chrome Web Store and pin it to the toolbar, so its icon is one click away.
- Leave the NaviNet page with the QR code open. Click the Authenticator icon, then “Add Account” → “QR Code” → “Scan QR from screen”.
- The account appears in the list with a six-digit code that changes every 30 seconds. Rename it if you like — the name is only for you.
- Go back to NaviNet and type the current code into the confirmation field. If it is about to expire, wait for the next one.
- NaviNet confirms that two-factor authentication is on. From now on it will ask for a code when you sign in — click the extension icon and copy it.
No QR code, or it will not scan? Look for the option to enter a key manually on NaviNet’s setup screen, copy the key, and add it in the extension with “Add Account” → “Manual” → “Secret Key”.

NaviNet’s help mentions no backup codes. If you lose your authenticator, your office’s NaviNet security officer is the person to ask — NantHealth Support cannot help with MFA. Because the QR code is shown only once, keep the extension’s automatic backups on: restoring one on a new computer brings the same codes back without anyone resetting your account.
The code is not accepted?
Most often the QR code changed: the website makes a new one each time its setup page is reloaded or opened again, so the account you added first no longer matches. Start the setup again, add the QR code that is on the screen now and type its code in straight away. Two entries for the same website? Use the newest. Other reasons: why codes are refused.
Typed the key in by hand? Paste it into the TOTP code generator and compare the code with the one in the extension. If they differ, the key was copied wrong — add the account again.
Questions
- Can I use NaviNet MFA without a phone?
- Yes. NaviNet’s help has its own instructions for using an authenticator browser extension “if you can’t use an authenticator app on your phone”: open the extension, scan the QR code in the NaviNet window, and type the code it shows. The Authenticator extension does exactly that in Chrome.
- Which authenticator app works with NaviNet?
- Any app that generates standard time-based one-time passwords (TOTP) — an authenticator app on your phone or an authenticator extension in your browser. Use the authenticator itself to scan the QR code, not your phone’s camera app.
- What if I lose access to my authenticator?
- Contact your office’s NaviNet security officer, who manages your NaviNet account — NantHealth Support cannot help with MFA. If the extension’s automatic backups are on, restoring one on the new computer is quicker: the codes carry on working.
- I have more than one NaviNet username. Which code do I use?
- Each username has its own entry in the authenticator. Use the code from the entry for the username you signed in with — rename the entries in the extension so you can tell them apart.
