A ClickUp account opens your Workspaces — tasks, docs, chats, goals and the files attached to them, often a whole company’s plans. Whoever has your password sees all of it. With 2FA on, ClickUp also asks for the code from your authenticator. Authenticator apps work on every plan; codes by text message need the Business plan or above.
Turn on two-factor authentication in ClickUp
- Sign in to ClickUp in Chrome on your computer.
- Click your account avatar in the upper-right corner and select “Settings”.
- In the two-factor authentication section, turn on “Authenticator App (TOTP)” and enter your password if ClickUp asks for it.
- ClickUp shows a QR code and a setup key: leave them on the screen and add the QR code to the extension as described below.
- Enter the code from the extension and click “Set up”.
Add ClickUp to Authenticator
- Install 2FA Authenticator from the Chrome Web Store and pin it to the toolbar, so its icon is one click away.
- Leave the ClickUp page with the QR code open. Click the Authenticator icon, then “Add Account” → “QR Code” → “Scan QR from screen”.
- The account appears in the list with a six-digit code that changes every 30 seconds. Rename it if you like — the name is only for you.
- Go back to ClickUp and type the current code into the confirmation field. If it is about to expire, wait for the next one.
- ClickUp confirms that two-factor authentication is on. From now on it will ask for a code when you sign in — click the extension icon and copy it.
No QR code, or it will not scan? Look for the option to enter a key manually on ClickUp’s setup screen, copy the key, and add it in the extension with “Add Account” → “Manual” → “Secret Key”.

ClickUp’s help does not describe backup codes. If you lose your authenticator, the way back runs through ClickUp Support. So while the QR code is on the screen, scan it with an authenticator on your phone as well, and keep the extension’s automatic backups on. On the Business plan and above, text messages can be added as a second method.
The code is not accepted?
Most often the QR code changed: the website makes a new one each time its setup page is reloaded or opened again, so the account you added first no longer matches. Start the setup again, add the QR code that is on the screen now and type its code in straight away. Two entries for the same website? Use the newest. Other reasons: why codes are refused.
Typed the key in by hand? Paste it into the TOTP code generator and compare the code with the one in the extension. If they differ, the key was copied wrong — add the account again.
Questions
- Can I use ClickUp 2FA without a phone?
- Yes. ClickUp suggests phone apps, but all it checks is the code, and any standard authenticator produces it. The Authenticator extension reads the QR code off ClickUp’s settings and generates the codes in Chrome.
- Do I need a paid plan for ClickUp 2FA?
- No. Members, limited members and guests can turn on authenticator-app 2FA on any ClickUp plan. Text-message codes need the Business plan or above and are not available in every region, and requiring 2FA for everyone in a Workspace is a Business plan feature too.
- How do I move ClickUp 2FA to a new authenticator?
- In Settings, turn the “Authenticator App (TOTP)” toggle off and confirm, then turn it on again, add the new QR code — or enter the setup key manually — and click “Save changes”. From then on only the new entry makes valid codes. If your Workspace requires 2FA, you cannot turn it off yourself.
- Why does ClickUp say my code is wrong?
- Usually the QR code changed: if the setup was opened again, ClickUp made a new one, and the account you added first no longer matches. Add the QR code that is on the screen now and type its code in straight away. If you have two entries for ClickUp, use the newest.
